Voluntary medical insurance (VMI)

Voluntary medical insurance (VMI)

Voluntary health Insurance (VMI) provides a wide range of medical services, however, it is important to be aware of some exceptions that may not be covered by your program. Understanding these exceptions will help you avoid unpleasant surprises and plan your medical care better.

The main exceptions to VMI coverage are:

Elective surgeries and examinations:

Some VMI programs may not cover elective surgeries and examinations when the diagnosed pathology does not threaten the patient's life.

Cosmetic procedures:

Services related to improving appearance, such as plastic surgery, cosmetic dermatology and dentistry, are usually not included in the coverage.

Treatment of chronic diseases:

Some programs may limit coverage for treatment of chronic diseases or require additional contributions to be included in the program.

Reproductive technologies:

Services related to infertility treatment, such as IVF (in vitro fertilization), may be excluded from coverage.

Psychiatric care:

Treatment of mental and behavioral disorders, including counseling and psychotherapy, is sometimes not covered by standard programs.

Treatment abroad:

Coverage of medical services outside the country of residence may be limited or excluded. See the publication on critical illness insurance.

Experimental and alternative treatments:

Some types of alternative medicine that are not recognized by official medicine cannot be covered by insurance. Knowing the exceptions helps you better plan your personal finances to avoid unexpected costs.
